For support coordinators: referring a participant to ABC
A guide for support coordinators referring a participant to ABC Plan Managers: how to refer, what details help, portal access and where invoices go.
If you’re a support coordinator helping a participant choose a plan manager, this page is for you. It covers who we are, how to refer someone, what details help, and how we keep you in the loop.
Who we are
ABC Plan Managers is a registered NDIS plan manager. We’re a family run business, founded by Anne and Trevor, with an office in Hope Island, Queensland and a postal address in Botany, New South Wales. We work with participants across Australia.
Plan management is the only NDIS support we provide. We don’t provide support coordination, support work, therapy or any other NDIS support. Our role is the money side of the plan, which keeps it separate from the supports you’re helping the participant arrange.
When you or the participant call us, you speak with our own small team, not a call centre.
Your role and ours
The NDIA describes the two roles this way: a support coordinator helps the participant with their supports, and a plan manager helps them keep track of their funding. Many participants use both.
Support coordinators can help participants understand their plan, including how their funding is managed. The choice of plan manager is always the participant’s.
How to refer a participant
Please check the participant (or their nominee) is happy for us to contact them before you send us their details. Then use whichever suits you:
- Call us on 0424 881 408 or 0412 613 331, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm (Queensland time).
- Email admin@abcplanmanagers.com.
- Use the form on our contact page. Choose whether the participant is switching or new to the NDIS, and select “Support coordinator” under how you heard about us.
- Register online. If the participant is ready to sign up, they or their nominee can complete our online registration, and we’ll finish the set up with them. You’ll find the link on our Client Portals page.
Details that help
You don’t need all of these to make a referral, but they help us get started:
- the participant’s name and the best way to contact them, plus any communication preferences
- their nominee’s details, if they have one
- a copy of their NDIS plan, or at least the plan dates and which budgets are plan managed
- whether they’re new to plan management or switching, and if switching, who their current plan manager is
- a list of their current providers, if it’s handy.
What happens next
- We contact the participant (and nominee) for a friendly chat about their plan.
- We email them a service agreement to sign on their phone, tablet or computer.
- The participant or their nominee records us as their plan manager with the NDIA. Under the NDIA’s rules a plan manager must be recorded as a “my provider” on the plan before it can be paid. The participant can accept our request in the my NDIS portal, call the NDIA on 1800 800 110, or ask their my NDIS contact. We can’t do this step for them. You’re welcome to help them with it.
- Once we’re recorded, we set the participant up on our participant portal and app.
If the participant doesn’t have plan management funding yet, they can ask the NDIA for it at any time during their plan through their my NDIS contact. Our guide on how to change NDIS plan managers has the full steps.
How we keep you in the loop
- Portal access. With the participant’s permission, support coordinators can log in to our participant portal to see budget balances, invoices, claim status and plan details. It’s the participant’s choice, and they can tell us who should have access.
- Talking to us. Call or email us any time during business hours. You’ll speak with a team member who knows the participant’s plan.
- Your own invoices. If you claim support coordination from plan managed funds, email your invoices to admin@abcplanmanagers.com. You can check when an invoice was received, sent to the NDIA and paid, and download your remittance advice, in our provider portal.
Common questions
Can I refer someone without asking them first?
Please don’t. The participant chooses their plan manager, so check they’re happy for us to contact them before you pass on their details.
Can I see the participant’s budget?
Yes, if the participant gives permission. We’ll set you up with access to our participant portal.
Does ABC provide support coordination or other supports?
No. Plan management is the only NDIS support we provide.
Can a participant switch to ABC in the middle of their plan?
Yes. The NDIA says participants can change their plan manager at any time during their plan.
What about the plan management panel from 2027?
The NDIA plans to launch a panel of plan managers from October 2027. Our page on the plan management changes sets out the official timeline.
